James is a young American writer and ex-pat living in Paris following in the footsteps of his idols, like Hemingway, as he takes advantage of all the intellectual curiosities a city like Paris has to offer. When he meets a young French pianist, Evelyne, the two form a fast friendship that quickly leads to a forbidden whirlwind romance. As France falls to the Nazis in September of 1940, James returns home but enlists to return to find his way back to Evelyne, who fights alongside the French resistance. Both fight with the hopes of returning to each other, to see Paris liberated once again.
